Dear Anderson Vertical Team Community,
The recent events that have been happening in our country, state and city, have been on the minds of each of us, as we try to process and find the right words to express how we are feeling. Just when we began to adjust to our new normal with COVID-19, the deaths of George Floyd and Mike Ramos seem too much to bear, and bring many emotions to mind- anger, disgust, sadness and fear. The Anderson Vertical Team recognizes that our community is hurting. We have always stood together and supported one another, and that solidarity is very much needed right now. The recent events have highlighted even more the need for us to be an inclusive and caring community where all people are heard, celebrated, honored, and respected.
As we feel these recent events, hope is ever present. The protests happening around the world remind us of the importance of free speech and the great change, justice and hope that can come from this movement. We don’t have all of the answers, and our experiences and mistakes shape our lives, but together we know that this could be a moment to harness great change in our city, state and country. As a vertical team, we pledge to continue our work to grow our own cultural proficiency and ensure inclusion, equity, and respect for all people.
We recognize that education is truly the place where change can start, to empower our students to love each other, and not hate. As much as we, the adults, sometimes struggle to make sense of what is happening, we know our students may not understand their world right now. We believe it is critical to have conversations with students about racism and racial injustice, however uncomfortable that may be. We, as a vertical team, are committed to having ongoing dialogue with all students, and we encourage parents to start these conversations at home. Below are some resources that may help guide and facilitate these important talks, as well as spark your thinking:
The Anderson Vertical Team stands firm on ensuring equitable and inclusive practices continue every day. We are committed to holding each other responsible for nurturing the school environments that welcome multiple perspectives. We are committed to embedding these practices into each Anderson Vertical Team school, every single day. We know this is ongoing work, and we are committed to this work.
All families deserve to raise their children in a community and world that is free of racism, discrimination and violence. We will be an even stronger community by working together, with purpose, empathy, and respect as we are united in our vision for our students.
With great faith and hope for the days ahead,
